Department of Ophthalmology:

Giving Vision to the Future

Our eyes serve as windows onto the world, bearing witness to the multi-colored brilliance of a rainbow, the oranges, yellows and purples of a sunset and the blue-and-green hues of the shimmering sea. Vision helps give life its color, soul and poetry. How terrible it is then when eyesight begins to fail or even completely disappears.

At UC Irvine, the Department of Ophthalmology’s distinguished faculty work together every day to save their patients’ sight and develop vision-saving therapies. Our specialists in corneal disease, glaucoma, macular degeneration and other serious conditions aim for nothing less than to improve the visual health of people everywhere.

Our vision experts include:
  • A physician whose early work with lasers helped lay the foundation for Lasik surgery
  • Scientists using stem cells to discover ways to regenerate the retina
  • A researcher working on a vaccine against eye and genital herpes infections
Going forward, the department is building a world-class eye institute on campus. When completed, the institute will be a national center of excellence for eye care and eye research and the only university eye clinic between San Diego and Los Angeles.  We are well on our way to becoming an international leader in eye care. Your support can help us get there.
